SARASOTA - The United Nations has designated April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day. The group is trying to raise awareness about the more than 35 million people affected by the brain disorder.
It is estimated that one out of every 150 American children are diagnosed with Autism. A simple poem can describe how the disease effects a child, but seeing how others cope really puts Autism into perspective.
"He just doesn't carry on a conversation, you know, like you and I are, so that's the frustrating part." Riley Joyce is seven years old. Doctors told his parents he was Autistic when he was only one. Since that time, Riley's parents have committed themselves to helping Riley learn. "We've set up half the living room as like a school room or school center."
"You have to have complete patience with a child with Autism."
The Joyce family has to label everything, like instructions on how to wash your hands and where to find the toothpaste, toothbrush and sink. And in his room, all of his drawers are labeled with pictures and words for what's inside.
"It's very tough."
And bills make their situation even harder. Riley's mom says his insurance doesn't pay a lot of his bills, so they have to pick up the rest along with some money from a grant. "I think I figured one time his therapy bills for a whole year was between eight and ten thousand dollars and the grant we get from United Cerebral Palsy is maybe $500 to go towards that."
Even with all the challenges the family faces, Riley's mom says she wouldn't change a thing. "He is so worth it."
The Autism Society of America says the lifetime costs of caring for an Autistic child ranges from $3.5 million to $5 million. The Joyce family estimates they spend more than $1,000 a month caring for Riley.
