Pinecraft Day Celebration features homemade products

Updated:

SARASOTA - Time now to head back to the day when baskets and quilts were handmade, and the smell of baked pies filled the streets.

All you have to do is go to Sarasota's Amish and Mennonite community, where the Pinecraft Day celebration is underway.

Pinecraft Day is an arts and crafts event featuring natural, homemade products.  These are things you won't find in a large discount store; made and sold by people you don't get to meet every day.

The Pinecraft Days offers something for everyone.  From hand-woven baskets to homemade jewelry...even woodwork.  "These are all my own creations.  I do original cards and prints.  I also paint murals."

"We actually showcase a lot of Amish and Mennonite crafters that come down here to visit," says coordinator Sheri DiBello.

Most come from northern states like Ohio and Indiana, and the Pinecraft Days is a good way to wrap up their trip to the Suncoast.  "Most of them are going to be going home within the next few weeks."

Even the popular Yoder's Restaurant says it will notice some decline.  "Easter seems to be the determining point.  A lot of the Amish and Mennonite folks want to be home for communion at there own church," says Todd Emrich of Yoder's.

So to take advantage of the handmade and homemade products, many folks will be stopping by the Pinecraft Days.

Pinecraft Days will last until Saturday, and is held on the corner of Beneva and Bahia Vista at the Beneva Marketplace Shopping Plaza.
