School's fundraising items stolen

Updated:

SARASOTA - It was a discovery that left some students and teachers in tears.  A thief broke into the New Gate School and stole nearly $5,000 worth of items.

It was a roomful of stuff that was stolen; All items that had been collected for the school's big annual fundraising event...taking place in just ten days.  The school has been planning for this event for months now, and one young woman has done most of that planning.

If you don't know Hannah Logan yet, chances are you will one day.  In just the past few months, the 17-year-old has managed high school, applying to 12 colleges, training for a marathon, working a part-time job, and being the only student to ever get to organize the New Gate School's largest annual fundraising event.  "Planning every last detail of it, because there's so much that goes into it.  Like so many things, lists and lists, like everyday.  So much stuff to do every time," says Logan.

But she does it all with a smile, even after what's happened.  For months, Logan and her team helped collect items to auction off at the fundraising event.  "This room was filled.  There wasn't room on the ground anymore."

The event, attended by nearly 300 parents and staff, raises an average of $130,000 for the school.  "Silent auction, live auction, dinner, dance, raffle...it's like the whole thing."  But with less than two weeks to go, someone broke into the storage shed.  "You walk in, and it's gone...gone."

Nearly all the collected auction items stolen.  "It's more shock than anything else.  Who would do this?  It's heart rendering. It's so distressing that someone would do this."

Some of the auction items stolen: a Tampa Bay Lightning VIP ticket package, a Lou Piniella autographed baseball, gift baskets, DVR's, gift certificates and jewelry.

"We had to call people and say you won't believe what happened.  Their response: ‘you've got to be kidding'."

Logan is also upset, but the teen is back at work to see how she can salvage the big event.  And she's doing it with a smile of course.  "Now, all there is to do is for us to get through it and get as many people to help out as we can."

Many of the items cannot be replaced, but Logan and her team says even so, they will just go back out and ask once again for donations to be auctioned off.  As far as who stole those items, deputies did dust for fingerprints, but so far there's little information to go on.
