ON THE GULF OF MEXICO (AP) - Investigators now hope they will be able to figure out why a device called a blowout preventer failed to stop millions of gallons of oil from gushing into the Gulf this summer. The blowout preventer was lifted from the ocean floor this weekend at the site of the busted oil well offshore.
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) - Bacteria found in some beaches in South Florida has forced health officials to warn the public about bacteria in the water. Water samples at a Hollywood beach in Broward County did not meet recommended state requirements. All other beaches in Broward are safe.
MIAMI (AP) - The father of Republican Senate candidate Marco Rubio has died after a long illness. He was 83. Rubio's campaign announced Saturday night that Mario Rubio died at Baptist Hospital in Miami after suffering from emphysema and lung cancer.
MIAMI (AP) - The president of Miami's Jungle Island has been charged with two misdemeanors following the brief escape of a gibbon and a tiger. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission determined Saturday the ape escaped due to human and mechanical error, and the cage in which the tiger was kept does not meet state requirements.
