SARASOTA COUNTY - The recent rains are not only bring some wet conditions, but also a few pests. More mosquitoes will soon be buzzing the area, bringing with them more than just bites.
Within a matter of days, the little worm-looking things will spread their wings and start looking for a tasty meal. It cold be you or your pet. They can spread diseases like West Nile, Eastern Equine, and St. Louis encephalitis, or heart worms for Fido.
Mosquito traps and chickens are stationed throughout the county and regularly tested for the viruses. Within the last month, one has come back positive. With the rainy season in effect, more than two dozen technicians are spraying standing water all over the area.
It's also important to make sure animals are vaccinated and everyone is taking a few extra precautions to turn over anything which collects rain water. That's because it only takes a little bit of H20 and a matter of days for the little guys to take flight and possibly bring a virus with them, says Dr. Eric Schreiber with Sarasota County Mosquito Control. "In certain cases it can make people sick. In some cases, especially with Eastern Equine encephalitis, you can have a higher degree of fatality. That's why it's real important to make sure you vaccinate your horses and pets. Make sure that you put repellant on during the night."
Just imagine if we didn't have mosquito control. In other parts of the world it's believed more than two million people a year die because of diseases brought on by the insect.
The evening is the most active time of the day.
