Local blood donations headed to Haiti

SARASOTA - Donated blood from Suncoast donors is on it's way to Haiti.  25 units of red blood cells have been carefully packaged and shipped Haiti via Ft. Lauderdale.

The Suncoast Community Blood Bank needs a hundred units of blood for local hospitals every day.  But they're lucky to have enough extra right now to help in Haiti, where the need for blood is critical.

"It's going directly from our donors to save lives in Haiti, and it really will save lives.  Without transfusions, a lot of victims down there would not make it," says director of lab services Chris Flood.

The value of the donation is about $5,000, but the blood bank is absorbing the cost and sending it as a gift.
