SARASOTA - One of the largest no kill non-profit cat adoption centers in the nation is right here on the Suncoast. Now Cat Depot has a new home for all their cats, and it is state-of-the-art.
If you are driving down 17th Street west of Tuttle Avenue in Sarasota, you would have noticed the building; it is massive compared to Cat Depot's old home on U.S. 301. The building was specifically designed with felines in mind.
Big cats, little ones, long haired, short hair; if you're looking for a feline, Cat Depot has 150 different ones to choose from.
"The facility is absolutely beautiful. I mean clearly it is set up for cats, with the indoor-outdoor spaces and the...just the most beautiful shelter I've seen before," says Becky Bouchard. She was on a mission to find a kitten for her daughter Emma, who's birthday was Tuesday.
Now finding that perfect pet is easier, now that the Cat Depot has gotten bigger. "I came this afternoon and I was so impressed I decided to come back, because I found one little cat that appealed to me so far," says Betty Hillman.
Cat Depot went from 2,400 square feet to 10,000 square feet of kitty paradise. Forget about those small metal cages; cats there roam free in a pod or suite, set to mimic what their new homes would be like. Hospital flooring and a modern filtration system makes the facility virtually odorless. "You'll see our filtration system, it is unique to the nation. Every single pod and suite has one...keep it a very clean environment," says Cat Depot's Shelly Thayer.
The co-founders of Cat Depot financed the new facility. And with the number of cats the rescue houses daily, it was needed.
While every day, cats find new homes...every day more new arrivals show up. "Right now across the nation, out of all the animals that go into shelters, 70% that are euthanized are cats; so there is a huge need to help cats," says Thayer.
And their facility is geared to do just that. And it even comes with a canine; Beignet is the resident cat tester. This dog's job is to become friends with the felines.
Cat Depot will have its official grand opening on January 16th and 17th.
The facility also houses two surgical suites. The non-profit is hoping to receive grant money or donations to start offering spay and neutering services for cats with homes on the Suncoast as well.
The new facility costs $45,000 a month to run.
