SARASOTA - Throughout this month, ABC 7 gave you a chance to win a $25,000 kitchen makeover.

About 100 people entered and we narrowed it down to seven finalists. This week, a panel of judges picked our winner, Shirley and Mike Cook of Sarasota.

We stopped by for a visit to take a look at their kitchen and what the future will bring for this very deserving family.

Shirley Cook has a lot to show off in her tiny kitchen, but most of it is not good. She keeps her containers in garbage bags, and everything else is stored in makeshift cabinets. Her appliances work, but they are very outdated and damaged.

She recently discovered that her burners on the stove were setting her pots on fire. The lighting is lacking too, and her cooking utensils are stuck wherever she can find the space.

"I have one drawer for silverware, my plastic wear consists of a big garbage bag, because I have no space to put it…the cabinets that I have in there are make-shift that I've gotten. I have a cabinet I put in that someone was throwing away," says Cook.

Now, this longtime ABC 7 viewer is getting a $25,000 kitchen makeover.

"I listen to the TV station all the time and I click on the website, and I saw the contest and I saw ugly kitchen and I said I really do have one and it's really not user friendly for me," explains Cook.

Atmosphere's Kitchen & Bath will transform the Cook's 110 square-foot kitchen. They plan to open it up and give it a complete makeover. "We're going to be able to completely redesign their space with new appliances, flooring, all new lighting…give there more space, more storage," says Marnie Theodoropoulos, Atmospheres Kitchen & Bath.

This could not go to a more deserving family. Mike Cook is visually impaired and has diabetes. Shirley Cook is recovering from major surgery and not able to do the work she normally loves. "I work at Doctor's Hospital on the orthopedic floor and I've been there 24 years, so you're usually helping others, yes so I'm on the other side of it, exactly, it's a little turn around for me, I'm on the other end of it right now."

The Cook's will meet with designers after Thanksgiving. Once the work begins, it will take about 4 to 5 weeks to transform their kitchen.

The Cook's invited ABC7 back to show you how it all turns out.
