Mother of slain South Florida student to speak

Associated Press - October 1, 2009 4:04 PM ET

MIAMI (AP) - The mother of a teenager who was fatally stabbed by another high school student says she blames the county school system for his death.

Anais Cruz, the mother of Juan Carlos Rivera, spoke out at a news conference Thursday. Cruz had traveled from Cuba to bury her son. She has hired a law firm to represent her.

Cruz says the Miami-Dade County school system should have provided more security at Coral Gables Senior High School, where her son was stabbed to death last month. She says the stabbing "could have been prevented."

Authorities have charged 17-year-old Andy Rodriguez with second-degree murder in connection to the fatal stabbing.
