Man dies after crane accident

Associated Press - June 18, 2009 5:44 AM ET

LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Fla. (AP) - A Broward County construction worker has died from the injuries he suffered when a crane collapsed.

Police say 43-year-old Albert Phillips was helping shore up a seawall in Lighthouse Point on Tuesday when a crane fell and pinned his legs. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that evening.

Kyle Martinez, a foreman with Ray Qualmann Marine, said the Pompano Beach-based company canceled work at the accident site Wednesday, out of respect for Phillips, who was hired in 2007.

Police and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident.
