SIESTA KEY, FL - The white sand beaches of Siesta Key in Sarasota consistently put the beach on national top-10 lists for best beaches. Tuesday, Suncoast residents took issue with county's use of brown sand to fill a hole.
70-year-old James Overbeck was arrested Tuesday on a misdemeanor trespassing charge while protesting a battle to spread a brownish sand on the beach. Overbeck threw himself on the sand in front of the work vehicles.
Sarasota County wanted to spread four truckloads of sand on a public access part of the beach to fill in a hole left after workers removed an old buried seawall. The county did compromise by reducing the amount of brown sand used to only two truckloads.
"They need to replace that volume of concrete that they took out with this type of sand (points to brown sand) that came from Lakewood Ranch, a pit out there in Lakewood Ranch, which we al know had orange groves at one time and they used all kinds of fertilizers, pesticides and God knows what else is in this sand," says protester Jay Connelly.
Siesta Key's sand has a very high quartz content, which makes it so white and keeps it from getting hot in the summer sun.
The county says the sand is state approved from Schroeder Manatee Ranch and just needs time to settle and mix with the Siesta sand. Once that happens, they say people won't be able to tell the difference.
