SARASOTA - It's no wonder during these stressful financial times the Salvation Army of South Sarasota County says their services are in high demand these days.
The Salvation Army of South Sarasota County is helping hundreds get by. Captain Chris Farrell describes it in one word.
"Busy. With the economy the way it is we are basically getting overrun with clients who need help."
But on Saturday, their food pantry got a boost as dozens of boxes with thousands of dollars worth of food were donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Venice.
Edit Alexander, a member of the church, stated, "I just thought that since the Salvation Army was such a good organization and helps so many people; I saw their shelves were really empty. Some people are homeless. They need a blanket, the toothpaste, toothbrush, and things like that. Donations such as these help us give bags of food as they come in for the most part. It starts to dwindle on occasion and that's where the community comes in."
Captain Farrell says many people might not realize that Venice and North Port do have a homeless population, which right now is growing.
"The average person would be shocked at the amount of people we have in situations like that. Not just adults, but young people as well. By donations and just wanting to support each other in the community we work together and make it happen. It gives you a good feeling. Especially when you're really helping people who really need it."
The Salvation Army of South Sarasota County is having a Thanksgiving
Day feast for anyone who wants to join them in Venice. They will even come pick you up or bring a meal to you.
