SARASOTA (WWSB) -The Sarasota County School District is asking the state to continue funding programs that help with school security and mental health.
Since the Parkland shooting, the school district has received funding from the state that has helped grow both their internal police force and their mental health programs.
Through this funding they have added a police chief, three sergeants, two regional response officers, and 26 school resource officers as part of their internal police force. They also have added sixteen mental health therapists at elementary schools and five at middle schools who are contracted through community agencies.
Governor Ron DeSantis is proposing in the budget this year to allocate $98.9 Million for school security throughout the state.
