VENICE (WWSB) - It took months for Sarasota County and developers to come to a final agreement, but this week, commissioners approved the plans for the new Venice Regional Bayfront Hospital. The decision, now making it official, there will be two hospitals in Venice.
The current Venice Regional has been the only hospital in the Venice area since 1951. While it’s provided high quality health care for so many years, officials and residents agree it’s time for a modern hospital with state-of-the-art technology. However, they’re not just getting one new hospital. They’re getting two.
The replacement hospital for Venice Regional will be built on East Venice Avenue near Jacaranda Boulevard. it will be a $200 million dollar facility with 290 beds, a 65 thousand square feet medical center, and a helicopter pad.
The second hospital will be the first Sarasota Memorial Hospital to enter the southern part of the county. It will be built in between Laurel and Pinebrook roads, and will feature 110 private rooms, a 28-bed emergency center and is being built to meet Category 4 hurricane standards. The hospital will also have its own central energy plant, plus a 400-space parking garage.
The Sarasota Memorial Venice Hospital will break ground in just a few months, and is expected to open its doors in Fall of 2021. The construction for the replacement Venice Regional Hospital will begin this Summer and it should be finished within 3 years.
