Sarasota detective removed from SWAT team after weapons stolen from unlocked vehicle

SARASOTA (WWSB) - The officer who had his weapons and SWAT equipment stolen from an unlocked Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office vehicle has been removed from the SWAT team.

The items, which included a sniper rifle and pistol, were stolen from Detective Brian Keane’s unlocked, unmarked vehicle sometime overnight between Dec. 3-4, 2018 in North Port, which is where he lives.

After an investigation, deputies managed to recover all of the stolen items with the exception of Detective Keane's taser, and several arrests were made.

“This detective did make a rather large mistake and the sheriff is very disappointed in that," said Kaitlyn Perez, a spokesperson for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. "Any agency member who leaves an agency vehicle unattended is expected to lock that vehicle."

An internal affairs investigation found that Detective Keane, an 18-year veteran, had failed to lock his vehicle and stored his firearms in the passenger compartment. Both are considered misconduct.

He was removed from the SWAT team on Monday and will have two days of suspension without pay.
