Woman fires shots at someone she “thought” was a burglar, deputies classify it as domestic disturbance

PALMETTO, Fl (WWSB) - Deputies in Manatee County headed to Palmetto Saturday morning after shots were fired during a domestic disturbance.

Around 7:43 a.m., a woman was in her home when she heard someone enter the back door. She grabbed a handgun and fired three shots at the person, who she thought was a burglar.

Deputies say it wasn’t a burglar. Rather, it was a man who had previously lived in the home and was in the process of moving out. Deputies say the man believed the woman wasn’t home because her car was not in the driveway.

The woman stopped shooting after she realized it wan’t a burglar. The man gathered his belongings and left the scene.

Deputies stopped him as he was driving away. Deputies interviewed him and the woman and determined the woman was shooting at someone she thought was breaking into her home and no charges were placed.

The handgun disappeared from the scene and was not located, according to deputies.

The woman’s 4-year-old son was asleep in bed at the time of the incident.

No one was injured.
