Witnesses say sandhill crane struck and killed by a car on Sarasota roadway

Sandhill Crane Death

SARASOTA (WWSB) - Witnesses say a sandhill crane was struck and killed right on Central Sarasota Parkway.

We’re being told the bird was standing in the road when it was hit by a white car Tuesday afternoon near Legacy Trail and near the entrance to the Turtle Rock development.

That vehicle ended up speeding away. None of the witnesses were able to get the license plate number or make of the car. The sandhill crane is one of Florida’s most popular birds.

“I hope mainly that people will see this and understand how heartbreaking it is to see a bird like that run down," said Kathryn Baker, a Sarasota resident. "They’re protected species. It’s awful because they are big, beautiful birds.”

If you had seen or heard anything about this, you’re being asked to contact the Florida Wildlife Commission.
