Neighbors frustrated over loud metal shredder noise from auto parts facility in Osprey

OSPREY (WWSB) - “It’s just ridiculous, you can be in any part of my house when it starts up and you can hear it,” said Greg Gallagher, an Osprey resident.

What Gallagher says he and others are dealing with in their Bay Oaks neighborhood is a metal shredder that is loud and that he says operates during all times of the day including early in the morning. The metal shredder sits on the Glueck’s Auto Parts property right next door.

“The shredder started up and there was this gigantic explosion," said Gallagher. "My 5-year-old granddaughter started crying, she thought somebody was trying to shoot with a shotgun or a big bomb.”

Glueck’s expansive property is right next to many different developments as shown by this Google Earth view. A friend of the owner of Glueck’s says they aren’t going anywhere and that they are abiding by the county allowed 80 decibel level. He says they also have placed shipping containers around the metal shredder to lower the noise level. In addition to the noise issue, Gallagher believes the machine is polluting the air and the neighborhood.

“I’m definitely going to look at selling my property because I’m not staying here with that thing operating, it’s just not safe,” said Gallagher.

Currently there are lawsuits filed by residents against Glueck’s and Glueck’s has also filed a lawsuit against the homeowners association.

We have reached out to Sarasota County and we are still awaiting a response on this issue.
