Ingredients

  • 1 oz canola oil
  • 1/4 C Diced yellow onion
  • 4 oz bacon
  • 4 cups Great Northern beans
  • 1/2 C brown sugar
  • 1/2 C bbq sauce
  • 1/4 C bbq rub
  • 2 tsp kosher salt

Instructions

The day before you plan on making your beans, soak them in water for 24 hours. Another option is to use store bought canned beans. Dice the onion and the bacon, sautee in the oil over medium heat until the bacon has rendered and the onions are translucent. In a mixing bowl combine the beans, brown sugar, bbq sauce, bbq rub, and the kosher salt. Once the onion and bacon are ready add them to the mixing bowl, stir it up, and pour into a baking dish. Put the beans in your grill at 250 degrees and smoke for 2 hours. This can be done in a gas or charcoal grill with some added wood chips for smoke, or a wood smoker if you have one available. Another option is to bake them in the oven at 325 degrees for 1 hour. Remove from the grill and stir, cool before serving. Garnish with chopped cooked bacon and chopped green onion.
